Anjaneya- the unparallelled bhakta

Anjaneya the bhakta non parallel. God himself and a pathway to the Gods too. In these times of distress and conflict a virtual pillar of strength and a symbol of hope. His very presence on earth a beacon offering direction in the path of spiritual progress.

Lord Anjaneya was so selfless that he refused moksha saying that he would remain on earth as long as the name of Lord Rama is uttered here.Emulating his qualities of total loyalty, steadfastness, fearlessness and the confidence to overcome seemingly unsurmountable obstacles could well offer a recipe for modern life.

It is no wonder then that the worship of Anjaneya has grown by leaps and bounds in the last few years. Earlier there used to be only a couple of temples famous for Hanuman as he is called in the South. One of them was the Namakkal Anjaneyar. Today, this has changed dramatically and we hear frequently of a new temple coming up. The proposed demolition of a Hanumar shrine on the GST road recently led to such a public outcry that the authorities had to back down and build a much bigger temple on the same spot.

There are many temples to Anjaneya in Chennai and one that has become very popular is the Nanganallur Anjaneyar temple.But here we look at another temple in the heart of the city, the Bhakta Anjaneyar temple at Alamelumangapuram, Mylapore.

Before going into some more details about the ‘mahaimai’ of Anjaneya to whom Valmiki has devoted a whole ‘kandam’ in the Ramayana. Reading the Sundara Kandam which describes Anjaneya’s journey to Lanka, his meeting with Sita, their ensuing conversations and so on, is believed to be a cure for any problem physical, mental or spiritual.

Reading the Sundara Kandam is always followed by reading a chapter in the Ramayana devoted to the Mahapattabhishekam of Lord Rama.

Anjaneya believed to be the son of Vayu has two main forms, bhakta and veera and both forms are beneficient. Bhakta Anjaneya stresses the devotional aspect while Veera Anjaneya underlines the importance of valour and fearlessness. It is also believed that Lord Siva himself manifested himself as Anjaneya to assist Lord Rama in overcoming the demon Ravana as Rama could not exercise his divine powers in that avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Like Lord Ganapati, worship of Anjaneya has overcome distinctions of creed. The Mylapore temple for instance sees an influx of devotees from all linguistic groups .The most popular feature here is the koti archana. One crore names of Anjaneya are being recited at the temple over a period of nearly two years.

The recitation which commenced in April 1997 is likely to reach its culmination around Oct-Dec 1999.

Devotees can participate in this by giving details of the date on which they would like archana to be done in their name .

The temple itself was constructed in the cul-de-sac under the direction of Kanchi Shankarachaya, His Holiness Jayendra Saraswati who desired that an Anjaneya temple in South Madras should be built with a tall vigraha.

Accordingly the temple was completed with a 18-foot vigraha made by Muthiah Stapathy.The yantra prathishtai was done on 31-3-85 and the ashtabandhana mahasamprokshanam was performed on 26-6-86.

Hanumath jayanti is celebrated in a grand manner in this temple from Dec 16 to Jan 14. The highpoints being the dazzling alankaram done to the lord. The decoration with butter, fruits and vadas and tulsi leaves make the vigraha so attractive that one cannot leave the temple but with a heavy heart.

Ramanavami celebrations are marked by music concerts and katha kalashepam and the Utsavamurthis of Lord Rama, Sita and Lakshmana with Hanuman are taken on a procession in the area.

As always the grace of Lord Vinayaka is required for any endeavour and Shri Vijaya Ganapathy has a sannidhi to himself in this temple.

A sannidhi for Lord Rama is to be built in the year 2000

The most popular offering to the Lord is the vadamalai on Thursdays and Saturdays. Devotees can offer 108 or 504 or1008 vadas strung as a garland.

Hanuman, an ardent devotee of Lord Rama, is worshipped by millions of people in India. Hanuman is the embodiment of devotion, dedication and strength. Devotees pray to Hanuman to remove the sufferings created by Saturn's and also to fulfill their wishes. There are temples all over India and in certain foreign countries, where Hanuman is worshipped as a God.

Hanuman is the son of Kesari and Anjana (the woman of highly spiritual native). Hanuman was born to Anjana as a boon from Vayu deva (Lord of air). Hence Hanuman is known as Vayuputra or Pawansut or Anjeneya or Anajaniputra.

As a child, Hanuman was fond of sweet fruits. When he was child, he thought Sun as sweet fruit and swallowed the Sun. The universe plunged into darkness. Indra ( of Devas) in his anger attacked Hanuman with by his vajraydha. Hanuman was wounded and became unconscious. His celestial father Vayu deva threatened to withdraw pran vayu (Vital air, oxygen) from all the creatures of universe, excluding Hanuman. The Devas became terrified after this threat and prayed to Vayu. They made Hanuman conscious and gave Him a part of their power. Yama, the God of death to save his father Sun, granted Hanuman a boon to be immortal. This pleased Vayu deva. Hanuman freed the Sun and the universe became lighted.

Supreme Devotee of Lord Rama

The epic of Ramayana contains the heroic deeds of Hanuman and stories of his devotion to Lord Rama, and his wife Sita. Hanuman jumps over the Indian Ocean and reaches Lanka in search of Sita, who was abducted by Raavana, the demon king. In the battle between Lord Rama and Raavana, in which Raavana was killed, Hanuman played a major role.

Once Lord Rama gave a necklace of pearl to Hanuman. Hanuman immediately broke the necklace and started to gaze every pearl. When Laxman asked Hanuman the reason for him glaring at each and every pearl, Hanuman replied that he is looking at Lord Rama. Hanuman was so convinced that his Lord Rama was present in his heart and is also present everywhere including the pearls (omnipresence). When they asked Hanuman to show Lord Rama within himself, Hanuman tore-open his chest. Everyone saw the Lord Rama and Sita were present in his heart.

Another incident was when Hanuman saw Sita was wearing sindur (vermilion). Hanuman asked Sita, why was she wearing sindur and Sita answered that `Sindur' provides good happening and long life to Lord Rama. Immediately Hanuman besmeared sindur in his whole body. When asked why Hanuman should smear sindur on himself, Hanuman answered earnestly that since Mother Sita was wearing sindur for Lord Rama's well being he was also wearing sindur for the same reason. Lord Rama was immensely moved and gave him blessings that the devotee who will offer Hanuman, sindur will cross all the hurdles.

During the war between Lord Rama and Raavana, an arrow of Meghnad hit the Laxman and he became unconscious. The army of Lord Rama sunk in the ocean of sadness and grief. Lord Rama himself was too much sad. Then Sushen Vaidya told that only `Sanjivani Booty' (A herb only found on Sumeru Hill) could save Laxman. Hanuman went on Sumeru hill, which was far away from the battlefield. There were many herbs like `Sanjivani Booty'. Confused Hanuman immediately lifted Sumeru Hill in his right hand and flew back to Lanka battlefield. Laxman was saved.

Hanuman has got very special position in the Ram Durbar (in the court of Ram). Without Hanuman Durbar is not completed. Hanuman always sat at the foot of Lord Rama. Neither Lord Rama nor Hanuman can live without each other. Once Lord Rama told Hanuman -`As long as my story is told and listened on earth, stay there.' Hanuman answered-`As long as your story in told (Ram Katha) I will be present on earth. So Hanuman is still present on earth.

Hanuman, the brahmachari

Hanuman remained a bachelor throughout his life. He was adventurous, strong, wise, cunning, knowledgeable, a musician, highly religious, courageous, fearless and, over and above all, totally devoted to his master Lord Rama.

The devotee is needed to worship him with whole heart, with full devotion. He will come to help us. His name is "Sankat Mochan" - means destroyer of all hurdles of human being. If devotees call him with full heart he immediately abolish his problem. Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday are auspicious to Hanuman. Hanuman is pleased with Vadamalai, (a garland of vadai), garland of thulsi or vetrilai, smearing of Sandal (Chandan Kaappu) and smearing of Butter (Vennai Kaappu).

This is a new translation of the words in the Hanuman Chalissa prepared by Ram Rani - posted March 5, 2006.

Having polished the mirror of my heart
with the dust of my Guru's lotus feet,
I sing the pure fame of the best of the Raghus,
which bestows the four fruits of life.
Knowing this body to be devoid of intelligence,
I recall the Son of the Wind.
Grant me strength, wit, and wisdom,
and remove my sorrows and shortcomings.
Siyaa vara Raamachandra pada jai sharanam
1. Victory to Hanuman, ocean of wisdom and virtue,
Hail Monkey Lord, illuminator of the three worlds.
2. Ram's emissary, abode of matchless power,
Anjani's son, named "Son of the Wind."
3. Great hero, mighty as a thunderbolt,
remover of evil thoughts and companion to the good.
4. Golden-hued and splendidly adorned,
with heavy earrings and curly locks.
5. In your hands shine mace and banner,
a sacred thread of munja grass adorns your shoulder.
6. You are Shiva's son and Kesari's joy,
your glory is revered throughout the world.
7. Supremely wise, virtuous, and clever,
you are ever intent on Ram's work.
8. You delight in hearing of the Lord's deeds,
Ram, Lakshman, and Sita dwell in your heart.
9. Assuming tiny form you appeared to Sita,
and in awesome guise you burned Lanka.
10. Taking dreadful form you slaughtered demons
and completed Lord Ram's mission.
11. Bringing the magic herb, you revived Lakshman,
and Ram embraced you with delight.
12. Greatly did the Raghu Lord praise you -
"Brother, you're as dear to me as Bharat!"
13. "May the thousand-mouthed serpent sing your fame!"
So saying, Shri's Lord drew you to Himself.
14. Sanak and the sages, Brahma, gods, and great saints,
Narada, Sarasvati, and the king of serpents,
15. Yama, Kubera, and the guardians of the quadrants,
poets and scholars - none can express your glory.
16. You rendered great service to Sugriva,
presenting him to Ram, you gave him kingship.
17. Vibhishana heeded your counsel
and became Lord of Lanka, as all the world knows.
18. Though the sun is thousands of miles away,
you swallowed it, thinking it a sweet fruit.
19. Holding the Lord's ring in your mouth,
it's no surprise you leapt the ocean.
20. Every arduous task in this world
becomes easy by your grace.
21. You are the guardian of Ram's door,
none enters without your leave.
22. Taking refuge in you one finds all delight,
those you protect know no fear.
23. You alone can withstand your own splendor,
the three worlds tremble at your roar.
24. Ghosts and goblins cannot come near,
Great Hero, when your name is uttered.
25. All disease and pain is eradicated,
brave Hanuman, by constant repetition of your name.
26. Hanuman releases from affliction
those who remember him in thought, word, and deed.
27. Ram the renunciant reigns over all -
you carry out his every task.
28. One who brings any yearning to you
obtains the fruit of abundant life.
29. Your splendor fills the four ages,
Your glory is famed throughout the world.
30. You are the guardian of saints and sages,
the destroyer of demons, the darling of Ram.
31. You grant the eight powers and nine treasures
by the boon you received from Mother Janaki.
32. You hold the elixir of Ram's name
and remain eternally His servant.
33. Singing your praise, one finds Ram
and escapes the sorrows of countless lives.
34. At death, one goes to Ram's own city
or is born on earth as God's devotee.
35. Give no thought to any other deity -
worshipping Hanuman, one gains all delight.
36. All affliction ceases, all pain is removed,
by remembering the mighty hero, Hanuman.
37. Victory, victory, victory to Lord Hanuman!
Be merciful even as is the Divine Master.
38. Whoever recites this a hundred times
is released from bondage and gains bliss.
39. One who reads this Hanuman Chalisa
gains success - Gauri's Lord bears witness.

Sri Hanuman was born of Anjani from Pavana, the wind-god. He was named Hanuman after the name of the city of Hanumpur over which his maternal uncle Parti Surya ruled. Hanuman's body was hard as a stone. So Anjani named him Vajranga. He is also known by the names "Mahavir" or mightiest hero (because he exhibited several heroic feats), Balibima and Maruti.

The world has not yet seen and will not see in future also a mighty hero like Sri Hanuman. During his life he worked wonders and exhibited superhuman feats of strength and valor. He has left behind him a name which, as long as the world lasts, will continue wielding a great influence over the minds of millions of people.

He is one of the seven Chiranjivis. He was the only learned scholar who knew the nine Vyakaranas. He learnt the Sastras from the sun-god. He was the wisest of the wise, strongest of the strong and bravest of the brave. He was the Sakti of Rudra. He who meditates on him and repeats his name attains power, strength, glory, prosperity and success in life. He is worshipped in all parts of India, particularly in Maharashtra.

He was born at the most auspicious hour of the morning of the 8th of the Lunar month, Chaitra, at 4 o'clock on the most blessed day, Tuesday.

He had the power to assume any form he liked; to swell his body to an enormous extent and to reduce it to the length of a thumb. His strength was superhuman. He was the terror of Rakshasas. He was well versed in the four Vedas and other sacred books. His valor, wisdom, knowledge of the scriptures and superhuman strength attracted everybody who came near him. He had extraordinary skill in warfare.

He was the chosen messenger, warrior and servant of Sri Rama. He was the votary and devotee of Lord Rama. Rama was his all in all. He lived to serve Rama. He lived in Rama. He lived for Rama. He was a minister and intimate friend of Sugriva.

From his very birth he exhibited extraordinary physical strength and worked many miracles.

When he was a child he put the sun into his mouth. All the gods were very much troubled. They came with folded hands to the child and humbly entreated him to release the sun. The child set free the sun at their request.

Hanuman saw Sri Rama for the first time in Kishkindha. Sri Rama and Lakshmana came there in the course of their search of Sita whom Ravana had carried away.

A Rishi pronounced a curse on Hanuman for his wrong action, that he would remain unconscious of his great strength and prowess till he met Sri Rama and served him with devotion. As soon as Hanuman beheld Sri Rama he became conscious of his strength and power.

In Lanka, Hanuman exhibited his immense strength and extraordinary powers. He destroyed the beautiful grove which was a pleasure resort of Ravana. He uprooted many trees and killed many Rakshasas. Ravana was very much infuriated at this. He sent Jambumali to fight against Sri Hanuman who took the trunk of a tree and hurled it against Jambumali and killed him. Ravana sent his son Aksha to fight against Hanuman. He was also killed. Then he sent Indrajit. Hanuman threw a great tree upon Indrajit. Indrajit fell down senseless on the ground. After some time Indrajit recovered his consciousness. He threw the noose of Brahma on Hanuman. Hanuman allowed himself to be bound by the noose. He wanted to honor Brahma. Indrajit ordered the Rakshasas to carry the monkey to his father's court. Even a hundred Rakshasas were not able to lift Hanuman.

Hanuman made himself as light as possible. The Rakshasas then lifted him up. When they placed him over their shoulders he suddenly became heavy and crushed them to death. Then Hanuman asked the Rakshasas to remove the rope. They removed the rope and Hanuman proceeded to the council hall of Ravana.

Ravana said, "O mischievous monkey, what will you say in your defence? I will put you to death." Hanuman laughed and said, "O wicked Ravana, give back Sita to Lord Rama and ask his pardon; otherwise you will be ruined and the whole of Lanka will be destroyed." These words of Hanuman made Ravana very furious. He asked the Rakshasas to cut off the head of Hanuman.

Vibhishana intervened and said, "O brother, it is not lawful and righteous to kill a messenger. You can inflict some punishment only."

Ravana consented. He wanted to deprive Hanuman of his tail and make him ugly. He ordered the Rakshasas to wrap Hanuman's tail with cloths soaked in oil and ghee. Hanuman extended his tail to such length and size that all the cloths in Lanka would not cover it. Then he reduced his tail of his own accord. The Rakshasas wrapped the tail with cloths soaked in oil and ghee and lighted the cloths. Hanuman expanded his body to an enormous size and began to jump from place to place. The whole of Lanka caught on fire. All the palatial buildings were burnt down to ashes.

Hanuman then jumped into the sea in order to cool and refresh himself. A drop of his perspiration fell into the mouth of a great fish which gave birth to a mighty hero named Makara Dhvaja. Makara Dhvaja is considered the son of Hanuman. Thereupon Hanuman went to the Asoka grove and told Sita all that he had done.

Then he crossed the sea through the air and came to the place where his army was placed. He told them all that had happened. Thereupon they all marched quickly to carry the good news to Sri Rama and Sugriva. They reached the city of Kishkindha. Hanuman gave Sita's ring to Lord Rama. Sri Rama rejoiced heartily. He praised Hanuman and embraced him saying, "O mighty hero I cannot repay your debt."

When all the brothers and sons of Ravana were killed, Ravana sent for his brother Ahi Ravana who was the king of the nether world. Ahi Ravana came to Lanka. Ravana asked his help to fight against Sri Rama and Lakshmana.

Ahi Ravana consented to help his brother. At the dead of night he assumed the form of Vibhishana, the brother of Ravana and an ally and devotee of Sri Rama. He reached the place where Rama and Lakshmana were sleeping. Hanuman was keeping watch. He thought that it was Vibhishana who was coming. Therefore he allowed him to enter the camp. Ahi Ravana quietly took the two brothers upon his shoulders and repaired to his kingdom.

When the day dawned, Hanuman found out that Sri Rama and Lakshmana were missing. He found out that Ahi Ravana had carried them to his kingdom. At once he proceeded to the nether world and received information that Ahi Ravana had made arrangements to kill the two brothers in sacrifice. Hanuman assumed a tiny form, entered the temple and sat over the image of the goddess. The image went down into the earth. Hanuman took her seat. When Ahi Ravana was about to sacrifice the two brothers, Hanuman appeared in his own form and killed him. He installed Makara Dhvaja, his own son on the throne, took the brothers on his shoulders and brought them to Lanka.

Hanuman killed many heroes in the great war. Dhumar, Vajro, Roshat, Ankhan and several other great warriors were killed by him.

When the great war was over, Vibhishana was installed on the throne of Lanka. The time of banishment was about to be over. Sri Rama, Lakshmana, Sita and Sri Hanuman sat in the Pushpaka Vimana or aeroplane and reached Ayodhya in time.

The coronation ceremony of Lord Rama was celebrated with great eclat and pomp. Sita gave Hanuman a necklace of pearls of rare quality. Hanuman received it with great respect and began to break the pearls with his teeth. Sita and other ministers who were sitting in the council hall were quite astonished at this queer act of Hanuman.

Sita asked Hanuman, "O mighty hero, what are you doing? Why do you break the pearls?" Sri Hanuman said, "O venerable mother, it is the most valuable necklace indeed as it has come to me through thy holy hand. But I want to find out whether any of the pearls contain my beloved Lord Rama. I do not keep a thing devoid of him. I do not find him in any of the pearls." Sita asked, "Tell me whether you keep Lord Rama within you." Sri Hanuman immediately tore open his heart and showed it to Sri Rama, Sita and others. They all found Lord Rama accompanied by Sita in the heart of Sri Hanuman.

Lord Rama rejoiced heartily. He came down the throne and embraced Hanuman and blessed him. Sri Hanuman passed the rest of his life in the company of the Lord.

When Sri Rama ascended to his supreme abode, Sri Hanuman also wished to follow him. But the Lord asked him to remain in this world as his representative and attend all the assemblies of men where discourses on his deeds were held and heard, and help his devotees in cultivating devotion.

He is a Chiranjeevi. He is everywhere. He who has eyes and devotion beholds him and receives his blessing.

Hanuman ranks first amongst the heroes of the world. His heroic deeds, wonderful exploits and marvelous feats of strength and bravery cannot be adequately described. His sense of duty was extremely laudable. He had great skill in all military tactics and methods of warfare. His crossing the sea of thirty miles in one leap and lifting the crest of a mountain in the palm of the hand, his carrying of the brothers on his shoulders from the nether world to Lanka are all astounding, superhuman feats which baffle human description.

He conquered innumerable difficulties which cropped up in his way through his courage, patience and undaunted spirit. He made untiring search to find Sita. At the time of danger he exhibited marvelous courage and presence of mind. He was steady and firm in his actions. He was always successful in his attempts. Failure was not known to him. He gave up his life in the service of the Lord. He had not a tinge of selfishness in his actions. All his actions were offerings unto Lord Rama. No one reached the peak in Dasya Bhava like Sri Hanuman. He was a rare jewel among devotees, the supreme head among Pundits, the king among celibates and the commander among heroes and warriors.

O mighty Hanuman, untiring and devoted Sevak of Sri Rama, joy of Anjana, king of Brahmacharins, show us the secrets of Brahmacharya and the ways to attain purity in thought, word and deed. May India have such heroes and Brahmacharins ever more!

Where Hanuman is, there are Sri Rama and Sri Sita and wherever Sri Rama and Sri Sita are praised and their deeds recited, there Hanuman is.

Glory to Hanuman, the blessed devotee of Lord Rama. Glory, glory to Sri Anjaneya, the mighty hero, undaunted warrior and learned Brahmacharin, the like of whom the world has not yet seen and will not see in time to come.

May his blessings be upon you all. Let us sing his glory now:

Hanuman in Srilanka

Hanuman is the student of a guru no less than Sun. On ascertaining that Sun is an all-knowing teacher, Hanuman raises his body to solar orbit and requests that Sun accept him as a student. Sun declines, saying, “I am ever on my wheels. Where can I be at a standstill to teach you leisurely? I have my unending duty to perform…” and he continues His celestial journey.

But Hanuman, undeterred by Sun’s travel, enlarges his body. He places one leg on the eastern range and the other on the western range, face turned toward the travelling Sun, and again makes his request. “My face will always be towards you, in whichever orbit you go, but teach me…oh! God…” says Hanuman. Pleased by his pertinence, Sun teaches all of His knowledge to Hanuman. It may be asked why Hanuman chose Sun alone as his teacher, for which it is said, Sun is karma saakshi, an eternal witness of all deeds/doings.

So Hanuman is also a witness to all the happenings in Ramayana, and performs whatever duty is assigned to him. This well-read one is instantaneously recognised by Rama on the very first appearance of Hanuman before Rama, in Kishkindha kaanda. Even today, any student is asked to adore Hanuman, to obtain such a stubborn health, enduring education, and above all a reverential scholarship.

But Hanuman’s monkey nature is not tolerable by some sages and hermits during his childhood. Hanuman teases and tickles the sages by snatching away their personal belongings, by spoiling well arranged worship articles, and more. Knowing that Hanuman is invincible by the blessings of all the celestials, and also he happens to be simple monkey, the sages give him a minor curse. It is that Hanuman does not remember his might on his own, but only recollects it whenever others remind him about it.

If Hanuman were to be aware of his own might, the course of Ramayana would have been otherwise. He would have simply enlarged his body and brought whole of Lanka island before Rama, as he has lifted sanjivini mountain, to enliven Lakshmana in the war with Ravana’s son, Indrajit. So this was a necessary curse upon Hanuman.

A monkey group that is sent to search for Sita reaches the southern seashore. There, upon seeing the vast ocean to cross over, every other monkey pleads his own inability to jump over the sea. Hanuman is saddened at a possible failure of his mission to search for Sita. Then all the monkeys around him start eulogising Hanuman and reminding him how he got Sun's attention during his student days. Hanuman remembers his own prowess, enlarges his body and jumps over the sea.

Sundara Kanda is an exclusive treatise about Hanuman. The whole of Ramayana is one side and Sundara Kanda on the other. Hanuman, after his entry into Lanka, and finding Sita, conveys the message as a teacher ordained by god. His character is said to be that of a divine Teacher, and Sita, the taught. Here, Rama is the Supreme God.

God communicates through eligible teachers only. The teacher not only enlightens the student, but also teaches humility. This teacher wanted to teach a lesson to the proud Lanka, who are thriving on stolen wealth. Lanka is built with golden towers, palatial buildings, and has he richest of the rich. This preternatural existence of Lanka would be a precedent to other evil forces so, it is to be damaged.

Then Hanuman suddenly dons his monkeyhood, and starts the destruction of prideful items one after the other. When Ravana’s son Indrajit uses brahma-astra Hanuman obliges that missile to tie him down, and be dragged to the court of Ravana. Hanuman wilfully enters the court of Ravana to assess the strength of the enemy of Rama.

This is another duty of a faithful emissary, teacher and minister, which Hanuman is. Ravana orders lit the tail of Hanuman, with which fire alone Hanuman burns down the whole of Lanka, turning their pride to ashes. Readers of Sundara Kanda may not give it a cursory or superficial reading, but an in-depth scrutiny may be conducted since it has many latent meanings and derivations.

A parable is told that Hanuman originally scripted the entire Ramayana on clay tablets, recording each and every detail of what Rama did, and brought them to Rama, to bless that narrative. Rama humbly said to Hanuman, “I have not done anything that great, to be recorded and narrated to people…I have done my righteous duty…that’s all” Then Hanuman was upset.

Dejected by the slighting of his great deeds as simple acts of duty by Rama, Hanuman brought those clay tablets to seashore, recited each verse, broke each tablet on his knee and threw it into the sea. This is called hanumad ramayana. This is unavailable from then on.

But one tablet came ashore floating on the sea, which is retrieved during the period of Mahakavi Kalidasa, and hung at a public place to be deciphered by scholars. There on that tablet only one foot of a stanza is available. That foot says “Oh! Ravana, those your ten heads, on which you lifted of Mt. Kailsha, the abode of God Shiva, are now bumped by the feet of crows and eagles, know what has happened to your high-headed pride, at the hands of virtue…”

Kalidasa deciphers it and informs everyone that it is from Hanumad Ramayana recorded by Hanuman, but an in extinct script, and salutes that clay plate for he is fortunate enough to see at least one foot of the stanza.

It is said that none can conclusively narrate about Hanuman, for he is many faceted. He is symbolic for his unwavering dedication to righteousness, unstinting performance of entrusted duties, and unfailing talents in serving his master, namely Rama.

One very important fact about Hanuman is: He is the fourth and the only other person in the Mahabharata to have heard The Gita from the mouth of Sri Krishna himself, the other four being Arjuna, Sanjaya and Dhritrashtra. He heard it by settling on the flag of the chariot of Arjuna which carried the Hanuman picture. It is also said that this was a boon that he asked of Lord Vishnu. He wanted to be of some assistance to the next avatar (incarnation) of Vishnu and he was granted the permission to be on Arjuna's chariot of whom Krishna was the charioteer in the war of Mahabharata.

In the Ramayana, Hanuman unites Lord Rama and Seetha.From a philosophical point of view, Lord Rama represents Paramatha or God and Seetha represents the Jivatama or the Induvidual Soul. Hanuman plays the role of a Guru who unites the Induvidual Soul or Person with the Paramatma or God. He is given the role of a Guru in several south Indian traditions.

Hanuman is also worshipped as five faced God – Panchamukha Hanuman. The origin of Sri Panchamukha Anjaneya Swami can be traced to a story in the Ramayana.During the war between Lord Rama and Ravana, Ravana took the help of a Demon Mahiravana, who was the king of pathala (Lower worlds).

Anjaneya in order to protect Lord Rama and Lakshmana formed a fortress with his tail. But Mahiravana took the form of Vibeeshana and took Lord Rama and Lakshmana to pathalaloka. Anjaneya entered pathala in search of Rama and Lakshmana. He found out that to kill Mahiravana he had to extinguish 5 lamps at the same time. So he took the Panchamukha form with Anjaneya, Hayagriva, Narasimha, Garuda and Varaha faces and extinguished the lamps. Mahiravana was killed immediately.

Tallest statue of Lord Subramaniya unveiled
KUALA LUMPUR: About 30,000 Hindu devotees and visitors came to witness the official unveiling of the country's tallest Lord Murugan statue on Jan 29, 2006 (Sunday) and the garlanding of the golden statue.
Temple officials were now hoping to get the 42.7m statue, located at the Sri Subramaniar Temple at the foot of Batu Caves, into the Guinness Book of World Records as the tallest Lord Murugan statue in the world.
Hundreds of balloons floated into the air and a shower of flowers fell from a hovering helicopter as Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu officially launched the opening ceremony about 6.15 pm on Jan 29, 2006.

As darkness fell, a spectacular 20-minute display of fireworks lit the RM2.5mil statue made of 1,550 cubic metres of concrete, 250 tonnes of steel bars and 300 litres of gold paint brought in from Thailand.
Fifteen Indian sculptors had worked on the project for three years.
A cultural performance by local artistes and singers from India continued till midnight.
Yesterday morning, just as many people turned up again at the temple to witness a giant garland being placed on the statue - two weeks before Thaipusam.
The RM15,000 flower garland, which was 43m long and weighed about a tonne, was made of chrysanthemums which will last less than a week under the hot sun.
"A total of five days without sleep and 18 men was what it took to prepare this enormous garland," said Sri Kertanas Floral manager, Mahendran Shanti.
"One hundred and fifty people had to carry the garland to the temple.
"We needed another 20 men to help lift it to the crane so it wouldn't sway and hit visitors," said Mahendran, who was among those who had carried the hefty garland.
It was a complex operation and it took about an hour to hook the garland to the crane and for the crane to place the garland on the statue.
"But all the hard work was worth it as we had hoped to have the statue as well as the garland ready before Thaipusam," said Mahendran's wife, Shanti.
V. Malarvanan, who had sponsored the garland, said the flowers were brought in from Cameron Highlands.
"Although I wasn't involved in the making of the garland, I was there the whole five days, to give them a little support so they wouldn't get side-tracked," he joked.
"I also hope that this giant garland will make it into the Malaysia Book of Records, following the successful entry of the statue into the archives," he said.
